Volume 1: Chapter Summaries (Holmes & Watson’s Origins)
Volume 1 introduces the core partnership and the novel’s first major case. Chapters 1–2 follow Dr. John Watson, a wounded army doctor, as he meets Sherlock Holmes and moves into 221B Baker Street, where he’s immediately fascinated by Holmes’s unorthodox detective skills. Chapters 3–6 detail the arrival of a mysterious murder case: a man found dead in an empty London house with no obvious cause of death, save for a single word scrawled in blood. Holmes uses his signature deductive reasoning to trace clues, leading him to a prime suspect. The final chapter of Volume 1 wraps up the immediate case, but leaves lingering questions about the killer’s motives.
