Brief Plot Overview
The novel follows U.S. Army Air Forces bombardier John Yossarian during World War II. Stationed on a Mediterranean island, he desperately wants to survive the war, but military rules and commanders keep raising the number of missions required to go home. Yossarian learns about a paradoxical rule—known as Catch-22—that traps soldiers in endless service. The story moves back and forth in time, showing missions, deaths, and absurd encounters that reveal how impossible it is to escape the system.
