Core Plot Summary
Act 1 opens in the parsonage of Salem, where a group of young girls is discovered dancing in the woods—an act forbidden by the strict Puritan community. When one girl falls into a mysterious unconscious state, rumors of witchcraft spread like wildfire. Key characters, including a disgraced farmer with a secret grudge and the local reverend’s insecure niece, navigate suspicion and lies to protect their own reputations. By the end of the act, several townspeople are accused of witchcraft, and the first seeds of the trial system are planted.
