Brief Plot Overview
The story opens after the death of Ivan Ilyich, a judge whose colleagues react with polite concern and private self-interest. The narrative then moves backward to show Ivan’s life: his focus on career success, social approval, and material comfort. When Ivan develops a mysterious illness, his orderly life begins to collapse. As his pain increases, he realizes that his past choices have left him emotionally isolated. Near the end of his life, Ivan experiences a moment of moral clarity that changes how he understands suffering and death.
