Core Plot Summary
The story centers on Desiree, a found infant adopted by a wealthy Louisiana family who grows into a gentle, well-loved young woman. She marries Armand Aubigny, a proud landowner, and they have a son whose arrival initially brings joy to their household. As the baby ages, however, both Armand and others notice the child begins to show physical traits associated with enslaved people on the plantation. Armand grows cold and distant, eventually blaming Desiree for the child’s appearance and implying she has unknown Black ancestry. Heartbroken, Desiree takes the infant and wanders into the bayou, never to be seen again. In the final twist, a letter reveals that Armand, not Desiree, is of mixed racial heritage.
