The story follows an unnamed narrator who travels to the remote, crumbling Usher mansion at the request of his childhood friend, Roderick Usher. Roderick, a reclusive artist, is struggling with a mysterious physical and mental illness, compounded by the declining health of his twin sister, Madeline.
