Core Plot Summary
The story centers on Charlie Gordon, a man with intellectual disability who volunteers for an experimental surgical procedure designed to boost intelligence. The procedure has already been successfully tested on Algernon, a laboratory mouse. After surgery, Charlie’s IQ skyrockets, and he quickly becomes a genius, gaining access to complex academic concepts and emotional self-awareness he never knew. As his intelligence grows, however, he confronts the isolation of his new reality, grappling with past trauma and the realization that his newfound abilities may not be permanent. When Algernon’s intelligence begins to decline rapidly, Charlie fears he will face the same fate, leading to a heartbreaking race against time to document his experience and understand the procedure’s limitations.
