Core Plot Summary
When Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, returns home from university, he finds his father dead, his mother remarried to his uncle Claudius (who now rules as king), and the court in a state of forced normalcy. A ghost claiming to be his father reveals Claudius murdered him, setting Hamlet on a path to avenge the crime. Plagued by self-doubt and a desire to confirm the ghost’s truth, Hamlet feigns madness, tests Claudius with a play reenacting the murder, and navigates fraught relationships with his mother, his love interest Ophelia, and his childhood friends. The play builds to a violent climax where nearly all central characters meet their end, leaving Denmark in the hands of a foreign prince.
