Core Plot Overview
The poem opens 10 years after the Trojan War ends. Odysseus, king of Ithaca, is stranded on a remote island, trapped by the nymph Calypso. Back home, his wife Penelope and son Telemachus fend off greedy suitors who have overtaken their palace, assuming Odysseus is dead. With help from the gods, Odysseus finally sets sail, facing monstrous obstacles like the one-eyed Cyclops, the enchantress Circe, and the deadly Sirens. Meanwhile, Telemachus travels to learn his father’s fate, growing from a timid youth into a confident leader. After 20 years away, Odysseus returns to Ithaca in disguise, reunites with Telemachus, and defeats the suitors to reclaim his throne and family.
