Core Plot Summary
After a plane crash leaves a group of British schoolboys stranded on an uninhabited tropical island, they initially attempt to form a civilized society. They elect a leader, establish rules, and focus on signals for rescue. As time passes, fear of a mythical “beast” splits the group: one faction prioritizes survival and hunting, abandoning order entirely, while the other clings to civilization and rescue efforts. The novel builds to a violent climax that exposes the fragility of societal norms when stripped of authority.
