Core Character Traits
Jim is defined by two dominant sides: his sensitive, introspective nature and his tendency toward detachment. As a child, he’s a lonely, bookish boy who finds solace in the natural world and his bond with Ántonia. As an adult, he’s a successful lawyer and writer, but he carries a quiet regret over the distance that grew between himself and the prairie life he once knew. His idealism often clashes with his passive approach to life, leaving him a bystander to some of the novel’s most pivotal moments.
