The Plan: Wisdom vs. Curiosity
Before reaching the Sirens, Odysseus receives specific instructions from the enchantress Circe. To survive the Sirens' seductive and deadly song, Odysseus commands his crew to plug their ears with softened beeswax. However, driven by a desire for total experience, Odysseus chooses to hear the song himself. He instructs his men to bind him tightly to the ship's mast and orders them to ignore his pleas for release, no matter how much he struggles. This plan allows Odysseus to gain the knowledge of the Sirens without the fatal consequences that usually follow.
