The Mentor and the Student Dynamic
Friar Lawrence acts as a surrogate father figure and spiritual advisor to Romeo. Unlike the distant relationship Romeo has with his biological father, Lord Montague, he turns to the Friar with his most intimate secrets. This relationship is built on trust, as the Friar is the first person to learn about Romeo's shift in affection from Rosaline to Juliet. In the context of the play, the Friar represents the 'wise elder' archetype, though his decisions are often as complicated as the passions of the youth he advises.
