Plot Structure and the Journey of the Self
The novel follows Siddhartha, a young man in ancient India, as he leaves his comfortable life as a Brahmin’s son to seek enlightenment. His journey is cyclical, moving from the intellectual teachings of his father to the physical discipline of the Samanas, the worldly pleasures of the city, and finally to the wisdom of the river. Unlike traditional hero journeys, Siddhartha's path is defined by the realization that wisdom cannot be taught by others; it must be experienced firsthand. Students should focus on how each phase of his life represents a different philosophical approach.
