Core Plot Summary
The story opens in the peaceful Shire, where a young hobbit named Frodo Baggins inherits a mysterious ring from his uncle, Bilbo. When the wizard Gandalf reveals the ring is the One Ring—forged by the dark lord Sauron to control all other magic rings—Frodo must flee the Shire to keep it out of enemy hands. Along the way, he is joined by three hobbit companions, and later by Gandalf, a dwarf, an elf, and two men. Together, they form the Fellowship of the Ring, tasked with carrying the ring to Mount Doom, the only place it can be destroyed. The journey is fraught with attacks from Sauron’s servants, and the Fellowship ultimately splits apart by the novel’s end, forcing members to face new, isolated challenges.
