Plot Summary and Narrative Arc
The story follows young Scout Finch and her brother Jem as they navigate childhood in Maycomb, Alabama, during the 1930s. The narrative is split between their fascination with their reclusive neighbor, Boo Radley, and the high-stakes legal battle led by their father, Atticus Finch. Atticus defends Tom Robinson, a Black man falsely accused of a crime, providing a lens through which the children witness the harsh realities of prejudice and the legal system.
