Core Plot Overview
The novel is divided into four sections, each from a distinct perspective and set on a key date between 1910 and 1928. The first three sections follow three Compson brothers: Benjy, a cognitively disabled man whose memory shifts randomly; Quentin, a Harvard student obsessed with family honor and his sister Caddy; and Jason, a bitter, financially driven cynic. The fourth, omniscient section focuses on Dilsey, the family’s Black cook, who provides a grounded counterpoint to the Compsons’ chaos. Together, the narratives trace the family’s unraveling, fueled by Caddy’s promiscuity, the loss of their estate, and the siblings’ unresolved trauma.
